Jumpstart Your Spiritual Growth with Reading

As we approach the New Year, I’ve been reflecting on what it means to grow as a disciple of Jesus in 2025. One of the ways you can do that is through the ministry of good Christian books (or audiobooks). If you’re ready to deepen your spiritual life or take the next step in your faith journey, here are four excellent book recommendations to guide and inspire you in the coming year:

1. Living By the Book by Howard Hendricks
Prof. Hendricks, a beloved professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, taught Bible Study Methods for decades, shaping countless students—including me! I had the privilege of being in his final class before he retired, and it was truly life-changing. This book captures his passion for helping everyday believers study Scripture with clarity and purpose (“putting the cookies on the bottom shelf” as he used to say). Whether you are a brand-new Bible reader or have been studying for decades, if you want to take your Bible study to the next level in 2025, this is the book for you.

2. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Don Whitney
Spiritual disciplines are “practices found in Scripture that promote spiritual growth among believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ.” In this excellent resource, Dr. Whitney lays out practical, biblical habits that can deepen your devotion and intimacy with the Lord. If you’re looking to start the year with new rhythms that draw you closer to Christ, this is a must-read.

3. Knowing God by J.I. Packer
This is one of the best books in my library, and I return to it every January to reorient my heart and mind toward the Lord. Packer excels at writing rich theology in an accessible way, encouraging readers to think deeply and worship fully. If you’re ready to grow in your understanding of God’s character and ways, don’t miss this one—you won’t regret it.

4. Our Legacy by John Hannah (Bonus!)
Dr. Hannah, a long-time professor of historical theology at Dallas Seminary, walks readers through the major doctrines of the Christian faith and how they’ve been understood throughout church history—sometimes for good, sometimes for ill. If you enjoy history and want to see how God has worked through His church, this book is for you.

If none of these suggestions resonate with you, I’d love to help you find the right book for your spiritual journey. Reach out anytime—I’m here to help!

Let’s make 2025 a year of growth, learning, and deeper intimacy with our Lord.
